Project aim: To research the regional and historical uniqueness of Latvia’s linguistic environment, developing it as a secure and strong foundation for national identity.

Thematic task of the project: Development of Latvia’s linguistic environment's regional and historical uniqueness. This task includes contemporary Latvian language research using statistical, visualization, and corpus linguistics methods, as well as the development of new linguistic directions in the following research areas:

  • Research in translation studies, contact linguistics, and areal linguistics, the competitiveness of the Latvian language in the contact language situation, the European and global multilingual context.
  • Research on Latvian language dialects, particularly the study of dialectal lexicon and grammar, as well as a sociolinguistic perspective on modern dialects, their vitality, and transformation under the influence of extralinguistic factors, based on fieldwork and scientific descriptions of dialectal material in digital repositories; development of e-tools and digital lexicographic resources: Latvian dialect atlas, development of dialectal dictionaries, and continuation of the linguistic part of the orthographic tool for Latgalian written language, to form a basis for including dialect descriptions in the European language atlas and developing a digital map of Latvian dialects.
  • Research of place-name systems and local usage traditions in districts, enhancement of the database of Latvian linguistic and historical toponyms.
  • Modernization and additions to the Historical Dictionary of the Latvian Language and the Corpus of Old Latvian Texts.
  • Research on the history and modern situation of the Latgalian written language, enhancement of the Modern Latgalian Written Language Corpus (MuLA), development of language technologies for the Latgalian written language.
