Erasmus+ Students Learned about Latvian Wedding Traditions

Wednesday, 28. June
On 4th November 2016 Erasmus+ and international students of RTA had an opportunity to learn about one of the most beautiful Latvian traditions- a wedding.

The preparation of the event took several weeks. Mentors and RTA students held in confidence the planned activities to surprise the students on the event day.

The wedding started in the Faculty of Engineering where the topic of the event was revealed. Then the roles were drawned.  From the very beginning there was astonishment and excitement in students` faces followed by joy and readiness to follow wedding outline. Diane Viaud from France get the role of a bride, but Umut Turkkan from Turkey was a bridegroom.  All wedding participants went to Rezekne Castle Hill to join the bridal-couple in marriage. Then followed the traditional ceremony on a bridge. We all were surprised at beeping in congratulation by passing traffic.

The party continued in a guest house. Upon the newlyweds` arrival at the guest house they had to cross the so-called gate of honour where guests them welcomed singing wedding songs which they had to learn beforehand. Then the traditional smashing of a plate, songs, first dance, party games and mičošana (an old Latvian tradition during which the newly-weds transform from bride and groom into husband and wife) followed.

All the students played their roles vigorously and with pleasure engaged in the wedding activities.

The participants of the event expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn about one of the most beautiful Latvian tradition.
